Your Home Is A System!
Comfort issues, ice dams, and elevated fuel bills are all signs that something is off balance. Typically the core issues causing these symptoms are uncontrolled air leakage and inadequate thermal boundaries.
By addressing these core issues in a smart and proactive way we can resolve or substantially improve many of the lingering issues you and your family have likely been experiencing. As you do your research and decide which path to take there are a few things to remember....
Fiberglass Insulation Is Not Effective.
Fiberglass insulation requires a dead air space for it to reach its rated R-values. This means that the pink stuff should be totally sealed and encapsulated on all six sides for it to work. Rare is the occasion where this becomes a reality, just look in your attic where it is left fully exposed!
When air passes through this layer of fiberglass insulation it carries heat and moisture through your home's walls and attic spaces creating situations where condensation and ice dams can easily occur. Products like cellulose slow air movement on their own making them much more effective.
New Windows Are (Typically) Not the Solution
Replacing the typical window usually results in a very low improvement in R-value, typically from R1-2 to R3-4. Through energy modeling, it has been shown over and over again that the payback on this improvement could be as long as 60 years!
A New Heating System Is (Typically) Not the Solution
If you have a boiler or furnace that is running fine then it typically makes sense to keep the system. System replacement and fuel switching are very expensive endeavors and in the end your home will still need the same amount of BTU's to stay warm and comfortable. Focus on the building envelope first and then make a decision if a new fuel is the right choice for your home.
